At a meeting of the Council of the Acclimatisation Society ifc was decided to ask the Government to bring tho oppossum under the Animals Protection Act, and proclaim a close season for them. _ Inree years ago two pairs were liberated in Longwood Bush, near Riverton, by the late Captain Hankinson, and have increased raridlv, and are now being shot for their skins. It is feared that it this is: contonug they will soon be extinct, whilo if Protected they will become a source of considerable revenue. A Home expert declares that the local furs are superior to Tasmanian or Victorian, and he and Colonel McDonald, of Dunedin, each gave £10 towards .protection.
