PARIS EXHIBITION.

INVITATION TO DR. LAISHLEY.

Dk. Lais___y has just received a personal invitation from bhe University of France to attend the International Congress concerning higher and secondary education. The invitation runs as follows :—" Universiby of France, Academy of Paris. Paris, bhe 19th April, 1889. Universal Exposition of 18S9, International Congress concerning higher and secondary teaching. Personal invitation. Sir, —On the occasion of the Universal Exposition an International Congress concerning higher and secondary teaching will be held at Paris in the Sorbonne from the sth to the 12th August. You will find under cover herewith an indication of the questions which will be discussed. In the name of tho Bureau, I now beg you to be willing bo much honour our proceedings with your presence, to which we attach the greatest value. Be pleased to receive, sir, the assurance of my high consideration of tho President Congress. With the invitation is enclosed to Dr. Laishley a circular from the Commitbee of Organisation. It is headed :—" Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Universal International Exposition of 1889. International Congress Concerning Higher and Secondary Teaching." The circular after sbabing thab quesbions of education have assumed • a place more and more importaub with social life of nations, aud that more and more also, by reason of the development of the means of transport, our modern civilisation has taken the character of a co-operation of all peoples in respect of divers works which are the objects of this most generous aspiration. The circular goes on bo state the objects of the Congress, and says bhab the Commibtee has decided to m.ke appeal to men of every nationality whose competence and aubhoriby are universally recognised. The circular then proceeds to say: "Wo pray you to accord to us your presence, to which we attach the greatest value." Then the circular gives the date and place of the Congress, and the proceedings, and the names of the honorary presidents, president, vice-presidents, secretary, and members, and also the questions chosen for discussion, which latter are as follows:— Questions chosen by the Committee of Organisation. (1) Limitation and approval of Secondary studies. (2) International equivalent in respect of studies and grades. (3) Different forms of secondary teaching; what position is ib proper that ancient" language, modern language, and science should respectively hold. (4) Concerning the method to be followed iv the secondary instruction of young girls in particular, for the teaching of living languages, and for the teaching of sciences. (5) What place Ought bo be assigned bo the economic and social sciences in progress of higher teaching ? This invitation is very gratifying, and shows thab Dr. Laishloy's writings on the subject of education have attracted abtenbion in France as well as elsewhere, and have caused bim to be accepted as an authority on educational matters.
