he declined to act on the Committee any longer. Cr. Jackson tendered his resignation on the same Committee. He considered they had reported honestly on tti9 cemetery and recreation reserves matters, and as it did not suit the views of a certain party in the Council, the chair allowed a motion to be carried in direct opposition to the report of the Reserved Committee. The motion referred to authorised the erection of stono walls, and interfered with the future plan of the Procreation Reserve, which was condemned by tho chairmen of tho various Road Boards in tho County of Eden at a meeting which was held last Friday at the Chamber of Commerce, Auckland. Complication of Troubles. — Local affairs are becoming more complicated every day. Some time ago the Government saddled on tho Council one-half th 9 cost cf maintenance of Mangere Bridge, and alao snatched from the town tho burial ground and placed on the Council the task of providing a cemetery elsewhere, liabilities inflicted on them unjustly, as they consider. Tho cause of all the trouble last evening was over the waterworks. The contractor, Mr W. Brierly, submitted his account, £1,604 8s Id, with the Engineer's final certificate appended for the sum of £1,333 4s Id. The Mayor remarked that before they undertook to consider the contractor's account he would wish to be satisfied if all persons had been paid who had done work for the contractor. He would • move, " That the contractor of tho waterworks be requested to comply with clause 20 of the general conditions of contract by making the statutory declaration required therein."—Cr. Jackson moved asT an amendment in the Avay of addition, " previous to the payment of any money in settlement of the contract.1'—Cr. Keehan wished to have the account dealt with. Ho said the contractor always paid every man honestly, and no doubt he had complied with the conditions and might have the declaration in hia pocket. —The contractor (Mr .Brierly), who was present, denounced tho action of the Mayor.— Cr. Jackson said ho could see no other eovirse open. First discuss the contractor's account and afterwards consider the time penalties. —The Mayor rose to make a statement. —Cr. Jackson fl will not beinternipted. I have the floor. —The Mayor: 1 will not be dictated to by you, sir.—Cr. Jackson : 1 insist that 1 will not be interrupted when speaking. The Mayor should not forget his manners. — The Mayor : Sit down, sir. (The Mayor made some remarks which led to plain speaking amongst several Councillors.) —At this stage of the proceedings the burgesses present appeared to join in the discussion, and all attempts to proceed with the business appeared futile.—The Mayor : 1 insist on order; if noc I will adjourn the Council. —Cr. Austin : i question your ruling.—The Mayor : I adjourn this Council for a fortnight.—The meeting was then brought to a close amidst the laughter and uproar of the burgesses present.
