LATEST SPORTING.
Considerable interest is being taken by Aucklanders in the meeting of Lochiel and Carbine in the Loch Plate, 2 miles, run under weight-for-age conditions at Flemington to-day. It is set down that the winner of any race, not a handicap, carries a 14ib penalty, so Carbine's victory m the Champion Stakes, will entail him in putting this up. The weights the pair will carry are : __Lochiel, 9st 41b : Carbine, 9s t. Ihis certainly favours Mr Stead's horse, but nevertheless the contest should be a very severe one. The other entries for the race include Malua, 9st 41b ; The Yeoman,, 9st 41b ; Cranbrook, 9st ; Canyon, 9st ; Tradition, 9st; Chaldean, ost; and Snowfoot, Sst. The Press Association cable that Lochiel was awarded lOst 71 bin the Place Handicap, run to-day, but he has been scratched. 1 earl Shell has been withdrawn from all engagements at the meeting. It is intended to hold a conference of delegates of the New Zealand Metropolitan Racing Clubs at Napier during the forthcoming race week. Mr G. H. Clifford has been appointed to represent the Canterbury Jockey Club, and a request has been sent to the Auckland Baeiug Club to send dowri a delegate.
A cricket match has been arranged to take place between a team of publicans and the local bookmakers Monday next. The Domain grouud has been secured and the wickets will be pitched at 11 o'clock. Mr A.. Glover captains the brethren of the metallic pencil, and Mr T. Foley the publicans, while Mr T. McEvvin has been entrusted with the catering. A brake leaves Glover's cigar divan at halfpast ten sharp, conveying the two teams. A pony and trotting race-meeting is advertised to be held ab Potter's Paddock on the 3Cth March. Nominations are due on the 15th March.
