MUTILATING A COW.
SEVEN CHINESE BEFORE THE
COURT.
All Chee, Ah Yum, Ah Choy, Ah Say, Ah Ching, Ah Mioon, Men Kerr, and Ab Yup, were°cnarged ab the Police' Court this morning before Mlessrs W. Duncan and H. WBding, justices, with having ab Kingsland on the 20th of February, unlawfully and maliciously wounded two cows value £8, the property of William Fr'eeney. inspector Broham asked that Mir Thomas Quoi should be sworn in as interpreter. Mr S. Hesketh objected to Mr Quoi, as he had been assisting the prosecution and was, he had reason to believe, prejudiced against them, in fact ho had been instrumental in getting some of them arrested. He had himself telegraphed to Palmerston for a Chinese interpreter, Mr W. P. Sing, but he could arrive not until to-morrow He would therefore ask that the case should be further adjourned. Mir Broham objected to a remand, and niOre especially against the idea of the defence supplying a.n interpreter. lie knew that Mv Quoi Was averse to being mixed up in the case, but the Crown had summonsed him, as he was the best English-speaking Chinaman in the place, The Bench*decided not to sustain the objection to Mir Quoi and the caso was accordingly proceeded with.. Ah Ghee, who was assisting the defence, ! informed Mr Hesketh that one of the prisoners could nob speak Mir Quoi's language* ' Mr Quoi said that he wao personally ncqnainbed wibh ali the prisoners, ac bhey all caino from the Canton district, the same as himself. He then asked the prisoner a question and he promptly answered that he did not. understand him, also replying in English. . ' Tho Bench decided thab he could understand, and accordinglybho first witness was called, Emily Freeney deposed to seeing .her father's two cows being milked between five and 6ix o'olook of. thab day. Her brothei' then'turned them out of the front gate, Later on they found one cow standing ,a little way from the Chinamen's garden, The cow had then been cut-in several places. Next morning bhe seoond cow was found lying in the creek beside bhe Chinamen's'fence. She was alive bub had bo be shot later on, She was all oub about. «
