A TERRIBLE GRIEVANCE.
WELLINGTON CANNOT AFFORD A POST-OFFICE CLOCK.

t Wellington, this day. There is great indignation in Wellington at the fact that the Government have refused to contribute towards the cost of a clock v for : the Post-office towrer. Some
months ago, in consequence, of representa-tions-made to the Government, it was understood that they wore to assist in obtaining a clock to replace the oiie destroyed by fire, and the Harbour Board and City Council promised to contribute £160 each towards the put-chase; the ainbbnt'.of which was _": estimated at ~£9OO. The AgentGeneral, instructed from Wellington, obtained' tenders;'from'twO" or three leading firms in London, and it was found that a first-class clock could be obtained for about £700. In the new. Post office tower provision is -being made for the clock, but to the astonishment of everybody the Government have intimated that they do not intend tccontrißute one penny W the cost of a timepiece. . The Chamber of .Commerce have decided to urge the City Council and Harbour Board to insist on the Government fulfilling its promise.
