PRESENTATION TO MR A. Y. HAY.
Yesterday afternoon' a number of the friendsof Mr1 A. Y. flay; lately accountant at this Ban k of New Zealand, assembled in the strangers' room ofithe Auckland Club for the purpose of giving him a memento of the esteem and regard in \vhich hois held by a large circle of those with whom he had* mingled during the past ten years: Mr H. (3. Tewsley was selected from amongst the, prominent citizens presentP;.!to; make the presentation, andsin doing B#expressed regret.that one of Mr Hay's oldest friends, -Oaptairit Hi F. 'Anderson, was absent through illness, Mr Tewdey referred to the many sterling good qualities of Mr Hay;' which had gained for him the warm friend** ship of all those - with whom he came in) contacti'and Whilst they wbre pleased tQS knowthat his removal tp Rangioraas tnan;t ager meant promotion, still 'they woulpl feel; his Joss as a friend and good citizen. •<HO: hoped that Mr Hay would find Canterbury a cohgeiiial locality, and he had no doubi) he would be a» successful in the acquisition of friends tbereas he Had been here. 5 Mr Hay^. in replying; said that he "felt Jt difficult under \such circumstances to express his feelings. Athough he- could hot find the utterance that he would like, he need harcHy assure those present that he appreciated their thoughtful consideration to the fullest extent, and that when far siway in his new home*his- thoughts would often revert to the kind friends he had left in sunny. Mr ■Tewsley then handed to Mr Hay a ; hand-somely-chased / sterling silver salver^ suitably inscribed;-with the- best wishes of all those present: arid of others unavoidably absent. ■:■ Mr!
