UNIVERSITY COLLEGE COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Auckland University College Council was held yesterday afternoon,*there being present '• Sir "J. 'il. O'Rorke1 (in the chair), Rev; D. Bruce, ; Rev. A. Reid/ Mr Justice Gillies, Sir F. Whitaker, Hon. Colonel Haultain, and Mr J. H. Upton. A comparatively small amount of business was done. Sir G. M. O'Rorke announced that his term of; chairmanship had expired, and on trie motion of Mr Justice Gillies he was re-elected. In thanking;the Council Sir Mauribe made isome felicitous remarks on the progress of the University in Auckland, and mentioned that Professor Brown's class in chemistry now numbered 50. The tnatt(3r of the feM of students whose names wefe'bh the books of the College here, but who;residedvin other places, was brought up, and after some discussion it was resolved that such students in Napier and Wellington, should be exempt from; all fees save that to the examiners. It was also resolved that theordinary fee of one guinea per subject charged at the examination of students who did not attend; lectures should be al- ■ lowed./ In reply to a student in Napier who wished to enter for the Sinclair-Gillies ! scholarship it was resolved to inform him : thaflthe Council did not propose holdj ingT'an examination in Napier this year for, that scholarship. Colonel Haultain I dre-w attention to an impression that preI vailesd that Bishop Cowie had changed the mdttd and design of Jthe College seal that had been approved by the Council. He stated that the motto of "Meliorasequ or " had only; been suggested, riot decided on by the Council. Current accounts amounting to £340 14s 4d passed for payment.
