MASQUERADE CARNIVAL.

The masquerade carnival at the Columbia Rink, held last evening, proved a grea b success. There were- about 100 skater in fancy costume and musked on the floor, while about. 300 spectators nysb have been present. The costumes were in the main new and original ones, some of them being very handsome and tasteful. At nine o clock the Grand March, under the supervision of Mr A. V. Harris, the general manager for the colony, and Mr, A. Salmon, the local manager, took place. The limelight t that played oh the skaters during this set off their gay dresses to^the best advantage. The trained donkey, Columbia, next made his appearance, and showed that unden his trainer's (Mr Sirnpson's) care he had in ten days made rapid progresa.on the .skates. Athree-mileiacebetween Mrßhodes, on a bicycle, and three skaters, Messrs'Rix, Carter, and Hough, excited some interest. 'Mr Rix held the bicyclist for, the first mile, but in the second Mr Rhodes gained a lap and a half on his opponent, Mr Carter, but he failed to increase this against his last opponent, Mr Hough. Mr Rhodes consequently won'the race by the lap and a half. Mr Salmon then distributed the following prizes, the „ competitions having been decided by Messrs Aitken, Ppulsen, and Macdonald, whose awards gavo general satisfaction.
