NEWTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Newton Borough Council was held last evening. Present -The Mayor (Mr Ambury), Crs. Faulder, Webley, Riggs, Cox, English, Donald, and Porter. _ ' New CoxraciLLOKa.— Crs. Cox, W ebley, and.Porter.taade the customary declaration and took their seats. ; CtEEK op ; Wobks. - Messrs Boylan and Lundon, the Borough Engineers, wrote informing the; Council that aa the pipes for the waterworks co; tract would arrive in about a week, it would be necessary to appoint a clerk of works. The Town Clerk was directed to advertise inviting applications for the position. It was decided that the Council should meet on the evening of Friday, October Ist, at 7 o'clock, to receive the applications, ahd that the Borough-Engineers be invited to assist the Council in selecting a suitable supervisor. . ; Refund oe . Duty..—Messrs Wingate, Burns and Co. wrote informing the Council that the Collector of Customs had agreed to refund the extra,. impqrt d uty ? imposed on the meters for the borough waterworks. — The thanks of the Council wore voted to Messrs Wingate, Burns, and Co. for the trouble they had gone to in the matter.—A letter from the Collector of Customs on the. matter was received. '

Richmond Wabd.—Cr. Faulder moved a resolution asking for a return of the cost of certain work done in Richmond Ward. He appreciated the work, but objected to the amount paid for it. He was getting the benefit of ithimself. He would also like to know who authorised the expenditure. The Mayor said.the matter had been referred to the Streets Committee and they had reported favourably, and the Council had authorised the -work to be- done.— Cn Faulder's resolution ;_ as carried.

Inspector of Nuisances.—-Mr J. Currie, Inspector of Nuisances, reported that he had examined and found the several abattoirs.in the borough to be in a cleanly condition. :_'s

Accounts. —■ Several current accounts were passed for payment.
