ARCH HILL WESLEYAN SABBATH SCHOOL.

The annual soiree in connection with tho above Sabbath school was held last even, ing. ■ The place was crowded, insomuch thab breathing space could hardly bo found for the many visitors. The afte r meeting was a great success. The. chair was occupied by Mr J. C. Diclcenson, who thd programme of'the evening with a capital address, which reviewed the, state of society before the introduction of Sabbath schools. He graphi cally described how the work had grown from step to step, till to-day there were at least 16,000,000 Sabbath-school scholars and a million teacher 3 throughout the world. Mr James Buttle gave a very impressive and practical address to the children, which specially bore upon their catechism lessons. A pleasant part of the meeting was a presentation by the trustees of two handsome volumes to the organist, Mr George Sinnet. That gentleman seemed surprised at the unexpected gift, and thanked the trust for their expressions of goodwill towards him. The presentation was mado by the Rev. E. Best, who afterwards gave an address of great power and fervour. He urged the use of the catechism, as it was about the best epitome of sound Christian teaching to be found in the world. 'The recitations by Mite Nettlingham and Mr Smeeton were of a high order of .merit. The, musical portion of the programme was eae of the most pleasing portions of the evening. The piece entitled " Resignation," sung by Miss Davis, was specially good, and rendered in a manner which showed excellent culture 'of voice. The instrumental duet by_ Migs Bushell»and Mr Ellyett was rendered in tt pleasing style and applauded at the close. -;J!aiss Jouning also eang, to the evident pleasure of the audience. The whole gathering was a great success, and every person *vas gratified at the result of the anniversary.
