SHORT WEIGHT.
(To the. Editor.)
Sm,—While tho bakers are compelled by law to give full weight bread, cannot something be done to compel dealers in butter, potatoes, &c., to give full weight? A pound of fresh butter should weigh I6ozs. avoirdupois, and a uwt. of potatoes 1121b., but pats and rolls, ofcfrijabL loucber are often considerably shore weight, and ,1001b. of potatoes are often sent pub A? a cwt. instead of, 1121b., - %«? defrauding.' the purchasers'and wronging more honest rivals in trade. If complaint be made, the farmers are blamed for the bhprb-weight butter, '• the boy ab the back" for the shortweight potatoes j but it is the duty of the shopkeeper to see that the farmer supplies proper weight, and thab <■' the boy at the back" knows the dilference between a hundred (1001b), of flour, and a Imndredwoight (1121b) of potaboes. I hope the liiapeefcor of Weights and Measures will look them yip and make an example of any offender, as so few;jpersoriß have the means of chepking the ivoighb supplied. What is tho good of correcb scales and stamped weights if still short weight bq given?—l am, etc., Thk Fatiiee of a, Huxcky Family.
