MURDEROUS ASSAULT.

A WOMAN STABBED,

Information was received in town to-day by Inspector Broham that a man named Edward Boyle had been arrested ab Helensville yesterday for stabbing a woman wibh whom he had been living for some years. Ib appears bhat shortly before 5 o'clock in the afternoon a boy named Thomas Boyle reported to Constable Foreman, who is stationed ab Helensville, bhab his fubher was killing his mother. The constable went witli the boy and met a man named Edward Boyle on bhe road. Upon asking him what ho had been doing lie said, "I give myself up. I am your prisoner." There was blood on Boyle's hand, and ho refused to return to his hou?o with tho constable. He was evidently under the influence of liquor. Foreman placed the man under arrest and then hurried to Boyle's house. There he found Mrs Hill, bhe woman wibh whom Boylo had been living. On examining the woman ho found a large wound in the left temple, from which blood was ilowing freely. The forelinger of bhe right hand was a 1..0 badly cu£. Apparently the wounds had been indicted with a knife. There was a large quantity of blood on the floor, and Mrs Hill's dress was also covered with blood. There were signs of a sbruggle having baleen place in bhe room. Dr. Jriall was called in and stitched up bhe wound, and the woman was pub to bed. When charged wibh the oil'ence, Boyle replied, "Ibs a good job ibs nob worse."

THE WOMAN'S STATEMENT,

Annie Hill, upon being questioned, stated that she had been Hying with tho man Boyle for the last eight years. She was sibting by the tiro about 4.30 o'clock yesterday, when Boylo cnmo in. She hud a baby in her arms. Boyle had a knife in his hands. He came up bo her and struck ab her wibh ib, bub missed hor. He did nob speak. She bhen ran outside on bhe road, Lllowed by Boyle, who, upon overtaking her, stabbed her in the face with the knife, spying at tho same time, "I will kill you." She foil into tho gutter, when Boyle tried to burn her face upwards and abtempted to stab her a second time. She gob hold of bhe knife and held ib unbil Mr Bailey came and took Boyle away. Her hand was badly cub while she was holding bhe knife. She had live children by her husband and also five by Boyle. Elizabebh Hill, daughber of bhe woman, v.as present when the assault was commibbed. She sbabes bhab she saw Boyle come in, bub did nob see bhe knife in his hand, until he abbacked her mobher. OTHER STATEMENTS. Henry Bailey states that he saw Boyle and Mrs Hill sbruggling in bhe gutter, and ran to separate them. Boyle said, " Don't do anything, Bailey. lam done, take the away." Boylo had a knife in his hand at the time, which was almost benb double. Dr. Hall 'states- that he was called to attend Mrs A. Hill. She was stabbed bebween bhe eye and the ear. The cut was aboub two inches long and nearly half an inch deep. Tho knife must have touched the bone. The temporal artery was severed and the loss of blood must have been great. He doe 3 not consider that is quito out of danger yet. Edward Boyle was charged before the Justice at Helensville this morning with unlawfully wounding Annie Hill. As the woman was unable to give evidence, a remand for eight days was granted.
