BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The Board met at 2 o'clock to-day. Present : Messrs J. H. Upton (Chairman) R_ Udy, Theo Cooper, J, M. Lennox, and CarrFinancial.—The balances on June 15th were : Education fund debit, £402 7s 6d ; buildiug fund credit, £2.046 ]2s 7d ; Girls' High School credit, £375 16s 7d. Teachers.—The Chairman reported tho resignation of Miss Jessie M. Murray and Mr F. Jessop. Mr Wornhatn had been appointed temporarily to Nelson-sbreeb school. Messrs Vvorfchington, Draffin, Carter, Gucrson, and Wells, and Misses Westvvood, McLeod, Airey, Wallis, Beale and Grant had been requested to assist in supervising examination of pupil teachers and candidates for employment. School Books.—A letter was received from the Minister of Education stating that his attention had been directed to the inconvenience to which they were subject through the frequent introduction of new school books. He asked did the Board deiein it desirable toexercise its authority for thepurpose of restricting bhefreedomof bhacfaerswith respect to choice of books, the authority referred to being conferred by Order-in-Council Gazette on July 7th, 1887.—TSie Chairman said the Board had now a set of books which they did not propose to change for many years. It was decided to reply accordingly.
