A LICENSING FIASCO.

(BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Taupo, this day. The hotelkeepers in this district are in great tribulation. The East and West Counties of Taupo being a special licensing district, the Licensing Bench is composed of three Europeans and a native assessor. The annual Licensing Court was notified for thesthinst., but the native assessor was absent at a Land Court near Napier and refused to attend. The licenses cannot be granted without his consent, and as all licenses terminate on the 30th inst. the houses will have to close unless the assessor can be prevailed on to attend before that date. The following are the, hotels concerned: —Gallagher's Lake Hotel, Noble's Taupo Hotel, Joshua's Spa Sanatorium, Brady's Ateanuri, Crowther's Kanga Taikei Hotel, Blake's Tokoanui Hotel, and Moon's Waotu Hotel. The licensees have telegraphed to tho member for the district, Mr William Kelly, asking him to interview the Minister oi Justice and represent to him the great injustice of the present Licensing Act, which empowers tne uaffvo accessor to withhold or grant licenses at his own sweet will or caprice. .
