STREET ROBBERIES IN MELBOURNE.

ONE ROBBER FIRES AT A

CONSTABLE,

A CITIZEN ATTACKED WITH

FIREARMS,

Melbourne, June 4th, A well-known criminal named Butcher Ryan, in company with another man, was robbing a man early this morning when Constable Nicholson appeared on the scene. Ryan fired a revolver at him, but missed him. The constable felled Ryan with his handcuffs, and the latter then ran off. The constable followed, and, when brought to bay, Ryan fired several more shots, none of which took effect. Eventually Ryan was captured after a fierce struggle. Herbert Wood, a resident of Carlton, was assaulted and robbed in Latrobe-streeb by three men, one of whom pointed a revolver at Wood's head and threatened to blow his brains out of his head if he made a noise.

[A cable message published yesterday .stated that Ryan has been discharged from custody, and that the constable will probably be charged with perjury.]
