THE SAILORS' REST.
These is an urgent need for some activity on the part of the management of the Sailors' Rest, if that institution is not to become wholly useless for the objects for which it was founded. The latest on thi s snbjecb is that the Saturday evening entertainments, which were carried on with much spirit and attracted crowded audiences in the old building, have now been abandoned. These entertainments were carried out under the management of Mr Murray, of the firm of Murray and Spencer, and that gentleman devoted much time to make them attractive to sailors. The sailors patronised these entertainments at the old Home ir. Queen-street, and on Saturday nights they used to assemble in crowds. Since the new and palatial Sailors' Rest was built, however, sailors have become almost unknown at the institution, and if the manager is to make a nice distinction of admitting none others, the premises might as well be closed up. For some reason or obher, bhe sailors rabher evade bhe Resbbhan make it their chief place of resort, and the sooner the cause is discovered, and a remedy applied, the better for the prospects of the institution.
