THE NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

SNIDERS TO BE USED. H

(BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Wellington, this day. The Premier of New South Wales has come in for a deal of opprobrium from the volunteers in Wellington, who have accused him of discourtesy in not replying to the message sent by the New Zealand Government last week, inquiring whether an extra supply of Martini-Henri rifles could be spared for the Rifle Association. It now turns out that Sir Henry Parkes replied immediately t6 the effect that only 300 weapons, not 350, as desired, can be sent, but the cablegram was mislaid in the Premier's office, and was quite forgotten until to-day. The Defence Department were not acquainted with the fact that a reply had been received, and were much disgusted to learn from me to-day that although the Premier of New South Wales had replied some days ago they had not been informed on the subject. Sniders will now be used at the meetings in Oamaru next month, but it is hoped that Martini Henris will be available for next year's gathering.
