NEWTON CONGREGATIONAL SUNDAY-SCHOOL.

Tub anniversary soiree in connection with the Newton Congregational Sundny-schooi was held last evening, when there was a large attendance. Tea was provided at 6.30 o'clock, tho tables being presided over by the following ladies: Mcsdomcs Lewis, Earle, Sraoeton, Warren, Lambourne, J. Rowe, E. Spragg, Wood, and Mills, and Alissos- Forth, liushill, Hopkins, Spragg, Pardington, Buchanan, Waldon, and Warren. At the tea all the availablo sitting accommodation was taken up, while tho public meeting which followed was crowded. Tho Jtov. Mr Lewis occupied the chair and opened tho proceedings with a few appropriate remarks. The 23rd annual report was read by Mr S. Smeoton. It showed that this school like others had suffered through the prevailing depression, which had caused both teachers and scholars to go away in search of employment consequently the linancou had suffered to a certain extent. The number of scholars afc present on tho roll waa 300, with a good average attendance during the year. Tho various associations connected with the school were Htated to be in a satisfactory condition. The report also mentioned that the present Superintendent of tlieHcliool had last Sunday completed the 21st year of his labours amongst them. Sir Ellyett next read the Financial Statement,which showed the total receipts from all sources to be £165 4s 5d ; the various disbursements still left a credit balance with which to commence the new year of £34 7s 3d. During the evening addresses were delivered by Ilevs. Gilmore (Baptist), Thomas and Chew, and Mr Enoch Wood. Miss Lizzie Warren sang " Tho Old Cathedral" and Miss Lavinia Hob.son "Resignation." Throughout the proceedings were of an enjoyable nature.
