COUNTY OF EDEN.
(To tho Editor.)
Sir,—Will you kindly allow me to utter a word of warning in regard to the attempt of the Government to bring into operation the Counties Act in Eden and the six other counties in which the Act is at present suspended. In the " Gazette " of the 20th is the appointment of Returning Officer for the seven counties. The election of these Councils is desired by the Government in order to force the Counties Act into operation. Mr Ballanoe is reported to have said Eden ought to be forced. The present Government appear of the same opinion, but the ratepayers will nob forget the fierce battle over this question* under the leadership of
Dr. Wallis, and, in the light of the experience of counties in which the Act is in operation, will see to it that men aye selected who will resist this attempt to cast additional burden, upon localities, by double rating, and less practical oversight of works, and a far more costly administration. —I am, etc., James W. Cake, Chairman Mount Roskill Road Board.
