The Depression and Local Industry.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —As a regular subscriber to your paper, I have watched night after night for some indications of a turn for the better in the state of affairs. I have walked in the city, and seen hundreds of men walking the streets wanting work. I have asked tradesmen and others if things are any better. The answer is '' No." Now, sir, we have industries in our midst that are languishing for want of support, and what do I hear ? Why, when {food workmen do not know where to get a crust of bread for their children our Government are sending our money—my money-—away, never to be seen here again. There were wanted fifty wire beds for one of our Government institutions. Did they order them here, where they can get as good an article and as cheap, and find employment for men ? No, they sent Home for 100 wire beds. Had I my way, those who sent should pay for them. They can be made here, even to the drawing-up bolts; and allow me to say I am constantly using bolts made in Auckland, and better there cannot be.—Yours, etc.,

Engineer.
