Death of Mr Winter.

Blenheim, Monday. Mr Richard Winter, editor of the Marl"Daily Times," and formerly of i the "Express," Blenheim, "Wanganui ;?Chronicle," and several papers in" the jNorth Island, died this evening at the Wairaii Hospital from mortification, caused by injuries received at the late fire. At a special meeting of the Borough Council, held this evenings a resolution was moved by His Worship the Mayor, and carried unanimously, " That it was with sincere regret that they heard of the death of Mr Richard Winter, editor of the Marlborough 'Daily Times.'" The Mayor referred to the deceased gentleman in feeling terms, and his remarks -were supported by every councillor. His death has cast quite a gloom over the town. His funeral takes place at two p.m. to-morrow, at the Catholic Cemetery. He was universally respected throughout the district by all classes of the community. No other casualties are reported from the fire. The jury at the inquest on Saturday, added a rider referring to the loose way in which the hotel was conducted, the landlord having admitted going to bed without closing the back door, and failing to procure fire escapes as ordered by the Licensing Committee.
