SPORTING NEWS.
A letter has been received by the Auckland Racing Club from Mr Evett declining the position of handicapper under the new conditions proposed. A meeting of the Committee is to be held to re-consider the matter. It is to be hoped that when the subject is discussed, the members will bear in mind that the interests of owners outside of Auckland have to be considered as well as those of local owners. Christchurch papers to hand by yesterday's mailstate that there is great dissatisfaction in the South at the proposal to submits Mr Evett's handicaps to a commitcee. , Napierites are also protesting against it. The Canterbury " Times " of Friday says : — "All the principal Canterbury owners have joined in t'ae protest (to which we referred last we(jk) against the new handicapping arrangements of the Auckland Racing Club," Added to this, the majority of sporting writers throughout the Colony condemn the fiction of the A.R.C. in their treament towards Mr Evett.
At the annual meeting of the Wellington Racing Club last night, the balance-sheet showed a total expenditure of £4,100, of which £3,200 was given in stakes. The receipts, co:topared with the previous year, showed a cxmsiderable falling off, and the totalisator commission was £525 less than the previous year. The Club's overdraft at the bank is £203, but the total deficit is slightly c/ver £500.
