TIES,

A SWEET " CORNER " IN GER-

MANY.

(special to association.)

London, August 29.

The French beet-root sugar manufacturers are strenuously opposing any proposition to repeal the sugar bounties, believing that the effect of doing so would be to benefit the German manufacturers and . extinguish the French trade.

A Magdeburg syndicate have, it is reported, purchased the whole of the sugar warehouse in Germany" during the month of June, and have raised the price to 17s Gd per cwt. As the result of these tactics, the price of sugar is still advancing in Germany ; but Herr Czarnikow, an authority on the subject declares that the actual value of the article is only 12s Gd per cwt.
