It is more than probable that there will be a split in the Protectionist camp, which may ' lead to curious development. The working men section are anxious to run Mr Hutchinson for * Dunedin Central, '" and presented him with a requisition signed by nearly 3,400. The league Committee, however, decided to give their full support to Hallenstein, and if Mr Hutchinson abandons Roslyn they threaten to remove him from office. Mr Hutchinson retorts by threatening to appeal over the heads of the Committee to the general body of the League.
The case Mcllhoue v. Davis, in which the plaintiff, claimed £17 for services as .an electioneering agent in a recent licensing election-was called on at the'R. M. Court yesterday afternoon. Mr Tlieo. Cooper appeared for the plaintiff and Mr Cotter for the defence. The plaintiff not being in attendance Mr Cooper asked for an adjournment for a fortnight. The adjournment was granted, plaintiff paying costs. 'Mr A. McAtthuiy M. A.,. LL.D., who was* for so long a teacher at the Training College here, also the able Hon. Sec. of the Educational Institute, has returned from Melbourne, and is now advertising ,bis. willingness to' prepare candidates for tlio Teachers, Civil Service, Matriculation, Law, or other examinations.
