OPERA HOUSE.- "The Pirates of Penzance."
. —.. <» —. The Comic Opera Gompany have reserved one of their most palpable " hits " for tho end of the season. Last night < they pro duced "The Pirates of Penzance" to a crowded house, and achieved with it a success that is as gratifying as it was pro. nounced and unquestionable. The piece was staged in first-class style, and we doubt whether its native humour has ever before in Auckland been brought into such strong and grotesque relief. At the close of the opera a very agreeable surprise was given the audience. Mr Brennir stepped forward with tho British Ensign in his hand, and sang " Rule Britannia," which introduced a charming transformation scene. Tho back scene was withdrawn, and disclosed to view a splendid tableau representing a galley with the royal standard as mainsail, and Miss Ada Walker as Britannia standing at tho prow with trident in hand, shield on arm, and helmet on. .head. At either sido of her reclined a nymph-in becoming attire. The audience broke into a perfect storm of applause, and sat in their seats after the curtain had dropped until ifc rose again. . There can be no doubt that "The. Pirates, of Penzance" is one of the-Company's trump cards, and a run of crowded houses should "mark the balance of the season, which is now rapidly approaching its termination. We reserve our criticism of the performers until to-morrow.
