NEW R.C. ARCHBISHOP OF MELBOURNE.
An Imposing; Reception.
Ab an early hour on Saturday morning crowds of peop'e had already assembled in the' neighbourhood of the' Spencer-street railway station bo wibness the arrival of Dr. Carr, the new R.C. Archbishop of Melbourne, and at 9 o'clock, when the train arrived, there must have been some 20,000 persons around the station in Burke-street, all desirous of obtaining a glimpse of the Archbishop. Representatives of the R.C. Church from all parts of the colonies were presenb on tne platform, and his Excellency the Governor was represented :by.his aide-de-cam;'., ".ho was presented to Dr. Carr as the 1. . .• alighted from the carriage.- After Bh.i..i*_g hands with those who were introduced to him, Dr. Carr was conducted to bis carriage,,one which was specially builb for presentation to him by.

A large ~procession-.was formed and marched through the principal streets of the city to the cathedral, where' a: large concourse of people had assembled. \ j in replying to an address his Grace promised that any amendments which were required to bring the Education Act into conformity with the convictions of Catholic parents would have his earnest advocacy; and in replying to bhe address of fche Hibernian Society his Grace touched upon Home Rule, excusing himself for speaking on the subject in a church by saying that as it was a question, concerning the religious interests of Ireland, it was not purely a political one. The Irish difficulty, his Grace said, had two branches—the land question and the Home Rule (question, and with regard to the former some modifications had been made in the land between landlord and tenant, but both were still unsatisfied. With regard,to fche latter it had been pro red to be absolutely essential, and were the land difficulty only settled thore would bo but little practical opposition to Home Rule. _ It was no longer a question between the Irish and the British Parliaments only, but also between the English parties.
