POLICE COURT.

Drunkenness,—Timothy Moses,' a man of. colour, was punished in the usual manner for drunkenness.

Assault. — George Murphy was charged with assaulting one Alexander Phillips by striking him on the head with a stone.': —Defendant pleaded not guilty. Alexander Phillips deposed that he was a shoe-black, and at 1.30 p.m. yesterday, while passing Mr Campbell's boot-shop, Vulcan Lane, a young man shoved him and" called himnames. The defendant was also present, and called him " a gravy-eyed old- ' ," and threw a stone at him,- which struck him on the head. The blow knocked him down, and stunned him. Witness gave no provocation.— John Lindsay gave corroborative evidence.—Detective Tuohy also gave evidence.—Accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour.

Shippino and Seamen's Act.—Mr Theo. Cooper intimated that the claim for wages by seanien of +.he s.s. Lalla Rookh against P. F. Daniels had been withdrawn.

Larceny.—James T. Fox was charged with the larceny of LSo 3s Bd, the money of the Postmaster-General of Sydney.—Detective Walker deposed to arresting the accused near Otorohanga,' in the King Country, on warrant received from Sydney. ■-Remanded till the 24th, pending the receipt of further documents relating to the case from Sydney.

Injuring a JElcad. —Joseph Lee was charged with unlawfully removing the surface, of a road in the pistrict of Mount Eoskill, by taking therefrom scoria ash,— Mr Theo. Cooper appeared for the Mount Roskill Road, Board, and Mr O'Meagher for the. • defendant.— J. W. Can , , Chairman of the Mount Roskill Road Board, gave evidence regarding the injury done to the. road, whereupon Mr O'Mergher stated that a mistake had been made in proceeding against the present defendant, as he was not present at all.—Case dismissed with costs. A similar charge against John Lupton was withdrawn. . •!,",.
