SCHOOL INSPECTION.
Letter From Mr Harrison
Mr E. M. C. Harrison, head - master of Boresford-street school, has forwarded to the Secrotary of tho Board of Education the following letter, enclosing tho correspondence that has taken place on the question of School Inspection : Sir, Will you bo good enough to lay tho following memorandum before tho Board at the next meeting. The number of subjects taught and examined upon in the Fifth and Six Standards, in this school, aro shown in my report to bo (at least) 32. That this statement is strictly accurated will bo evident from an examination of tho list furnished. Thus, drawing, though appearing in tho syllabus as a subject, is taught and examined upon as four distinct subjects. It will be clear to any practical mind even though unfamiliar with details of school work, that freehanrd model drawing, perspective and geometrical drawing, cannot bo taught at one and the same sime. Each branch of the subject requires separate time and distinct treatment. It will be equally clear that no child can be taught law, citizenship, labour, capital, money and banking at one and tho samo time. Each of these requires separate time and some modification of treatment; each more or less helps to exhaust tho wholo time spent'in school. The list on page three of printed report laid before the Board is an exact record of tho subjects taught to tho Sixth Standard and examined upon in this school. In all matters not merely of opinion I havo long accustomed myself to proceed with great caution. In matters of evidence I prefer rather to understate than overstate the case, It will bo seen that the number of subject, for the Sixth Standard—each requiring a separate part of the wholo time devoted to school-work —is not fewer than 32, and may fairly bo shown to be even more.—Yours, etc. ,■ E. M. C. Harrison. ' ■;■•■•_
