THAMES LICENSING COMMITTEES.
(by telegram.—own correspondent.)
Thames, this day. Adjourned meetings of the Licensing Committees for the Thames Central and South Districts were held yesterday afternoon, and excited considerable interest. In the former district applications for renewal of license for the Queen's and Provincial Hotels were granted, while those for the Junction (Mrßurton)andHazelbank(MrGodkin)were refused. In the case of Mr Burton's hotel the application had been adjourned from last meeting, it being understood that the adjournment was to permit of the Commissioners visiting tho hotel and ascertaining whether the accommodation was sufficient; but .the Chairman yesterday afternoon denied that sucli was the ground upon which it had been adjonrned. Mr Lush, who appeared for Mr Burton, contended that it had: been adjourned for this purpose, as the clerk of the Committee, inspector andreporters who were present could testify. The Committee refused to alter their decision. Tho decision has given riso to considerable adverse comment, and the action of tho Committee is strongly condemned. It is rumoured there is some likelihood of tho matter being taken to the Supremo Court.
In the South Districb applications for the Globo (Delahunty) and Bendigo (Costello) wero refused. ' The following hotels have been closed up to tho present: City of Glasgow, Golden Eyo, Hazelbank, Junction, Bay View, Commercial, Globe, Bendigo, Coach and Horses, while the Shotover (Tararu) is to bo voluntarily closed by tho owner. A meeting of Parawai Committee will be held to-day, when ib is probable that the only three hotels in tho district will be closed.
