LAKE TAKAPUNA PLEASURE GARDENS.

Lake Takapuna, after sleeping for many years in its sylvan beauty, seems to be awakening to a more active and useful life. The proposal to dredge a channel through Shoal Bay, bringing tho Lake within three miles of Queen-strnet Wharf, is in the handp of a strong provisional committee. Should this fail, the Tramway Company (who havo already secured the right to do so) have promised to lay their rails so soon as a sufficient number of shares are taken up by the property holders. Messrs Davis Bros, also, who for some years have run the coach, promise a more frequent regular time table on and after November next. Several ref idences have been Greeted during the last few months, notwithstanding the prevailing depression, and others are to be erected shortly. Mr Durance, well-known Jor many years as one of the department managers at Arch Clark and Son?', has decided to throw open to tho public, at a nominal charge, his grounds, with lake frontage, for picnics, etc. They are eminently adapted for the purpose, being one of the few pro perties round the Lake where the native bush has been preserved. Portions are level, open grass land, suitable for lawn tennla and all outdoor games, being on the near side of the Lake with main road frontage. 'Buses piss several times daily. This beautiful district, so long neglected on account of the poor communication, must ultimately become one of the favourite spots round Auckland, nature having blessed it with many peculiar advantages which adapt it for carrying a large suburban population.
