FORGERY AT WANGANUI.

Wangani'i, this day. A. E. WOOD, the prisoner who pleaded guilty to forgery, and was remanded ponding inquiries of the Probation Officer, was brought up this morning, and sen tencfd to twelve months' hard labour. Tho Chief Justice was sati'ficd that the prit-oner was not one entitled to the benefit of the First Offenders' Act. He romarked that it was almost impossible for a person continually?hiftingabout from place to place to pocure witneeses a? to character. The Act needed careful administration, and so far very few prisoners had been brought before him who were proper subjects to bo allowed probation. The Court is now sitting as a Compensation Court in Hammond v. the Public Workß Departinont.
