The Caulfield Cup,
Melbourne, Thursday, In consequence of a report that a gnat gallop took place at Caulfieldto-day between Jim Cain and Little John, a considerable amount of money has been invested on the latter, and he has been backed down to 6 to 1. About Silvermino 4 to 1 is taken and offered, on the strength of a gallop thie morning. Islander has been backed to win a couple of thousands at 100 to 2. He is now quoted at 100 to 3. Quotations :9 to 2 against Silvermine, 8 to 1 against Little John and Recall, 9 to 1 against Britisher, 10 to 1 againEt Ben Bolt and Boolka, and 15 to 1 against The Lovite.
A large number of horses were out at Flemington this morning. St. John did a lj- mile in excellent style in 2minp. 52i86cs. Monte Christo and Trident finished a spin over the Derby distance together, the latter moving rather stiffly after bis work. Islander is in splendid condition, and did the beßt gallop of the morning, covering 11 furlongs in 2miu. 31Jsec.
