At tho inquest hold here yesterday upon the remains of the child found by tho policp, ovidenco wa? given that a woman named Sal Sorgonien gave birth to a female child two months ago.andamonthafterwaids romored to another cottage, taking her two children with her. She remained at tho latter placo about a week, and thon went to Dunedin with only one child, and told her friends that tho other was with a woman named Scott, at East Tieri. Tho child had disappeared so suddenly that tho neighbours suspected foul play. I>r. Garland's evidence Bhowod that the body waß frightfully mutilated, there being soveral cuts on the head; ono leg w>is chopped off at the hip. and one foot and tho whole of the abdominal viscera are missing. The trunk was also cut and brui»ed. The sex of tho murderer! child cannot be ascertained. The inquest stands adjourned for a fortnight, to give time for further investigation.
