Another Caffrey and Perm Hunt
The " Western Star," Riverton, has the following in a rocent issue :—A cutter bearing towards Orepuki on Monday afternoon caused quite a flutter of excitement in that locality on it being suggested, by one who professed to know, that the vossoi was tho notorious Sovereign of the Seas. Equal to the occasion, and with visions of a £200 reward and speedy promotion in tho " foorco" sticking out, the local guardian of tho poace quickly doffed his official attire, and in plain clothes and a couple of reliable "shooting irons'' in his pocket, headod a party ol civilians to the beach with the intention of making an attempt to capture the desperadoo„ Having arrived there the party had not to wait long in susponse, as the craft running before a strong oastorly breeze soon nearcd the land, and when she got undor the lee of Monkey Island cast anchor. A poupleof suspicious-looking men put off in a dingey, and aa they approached the landing great disappointment was expressed on the visages of the leader aud other members of the party, on the rovers turning out to be no other than Billy Thomas and his mate, of the Riverton cutter Chamr i ,a. They had been out on a fishing cruiso, but owing to their being uuable to reach Riverton through adverse weather, they had to run for Orepuki to obtain a supply of provisions. Tho disgust of tho valiant band on discovering thoir mistake may bo hotter.imagined than described.
