ARRIVAL OF THE MARIPOSA.

The U.M.S. Maripoaa, 3,158 tons, under charter to the (Union Steamship Company on the San Francisco mail contraot, arrived in port at 10.45 this morning. Sho was not signalled until she had got inside of Rangitoto reel, owing to the thick .weather prevailing outside, ana consequently there was not a large crowd on the Wharf to witness her arrival. Pilot Sainty, who was in charge, brought the steamer alongside of the end of the Queen-street wharf in flrst-class style, and no time was lost in getting passengers and mails ashore, and the discharging of cargo commenced. The Mariposa is a sister ship to the Alameda, and except that Bhe is about 300 tons larger than the latter vessel, tho description already given of one vessel will apply to both. The Mariposa did not bring a large number of passengers, and her cargo list for Sydney was smaller than that usually carried by tho mail steamers. For Auckland she brought 10 saloon and 15 steerage passengers, and for Sydney 14 saloon and 18 steerage passengers. The Mariposa is officered us follows-Captain, 11. M. Hay ward; chief officer, J. H. Ferguson; chief engineer, Harry. Wilson; purser, C. W. Carpenter; surgeon, B. D, Johnson. Report. Captain Hay ward reports of the voyage:— Sailed from San Francisco December 20th: discharged pilot 3.20 p.m. First four days moderate to strong S. W. gales, with heavy sea, during which was obliged to slow ship for a time, as she was taking considerable water on deck. Sustained no damage, and arrived at Honolulu December 27th, at 3 p.m. Sailed 28th, at 9 a.m. Detention, 18 hours. Had light winds and fine weather to Tutuila, arriving January 3, at 5 p.m. Stopped 30 minutes. From Tutuila to 180 th meridian experienced dark, overcast weather, strong S. E. winds, fierce squalls, and heavy rain, increasing off Tonga Islands to a, hard gale with heavy cross sea. Thence to port flne weather with light southerly winds, Toot Auckland pilot January 9,9,80 a.m. Passengers. The following were passengers for Auokland i Cabin -—Louis fi. Degener, U. D. Coddington, V W» Bridges, wife and child, H. Sears and wife J. Owen, H. H. Lusk, Mr Upolti, and Sen JUanU. Steerage:—A. WiUey, Wra. Harcourt, Bordon Harcourt, Lucy Harcourt, Margaret Harcourt, Joseph B. Jackson, J. Larsen, wife and four children, J. Sinclair, VV. Mathewson, J Tiadalo. We aro indebted to Mr C. W.
