AUCKLAND INSTITUTE.
The inaugural meeting of tho Auckland Institute for tho present session took place in tho Museum Building last night, thero be ing a fair attendance. NEW MEMIIKR3 AND DONATIONS. The Socretary (Mr T. F. Cbecsoman) read the following list of now membors :— Mrs Eric Craig, Auckland; S. Ensthnm, Devonp.rt ; 0. Hudson, Auckland ; J, Kenderdine, Auckland ; J. 8. Rutherford, '■ Auckland ; W. Toil, Auokland. A long list of donations of curios to Mtisoum and Library was also read out. INAUaURAI, AT-OKKf-S. Mr J. A. I'ond (President of the Institute) then delivered the annual address. Ho began with a graceful allusion to tho munificent bequest of the lato Mr E. Costley, and alter a comparison of the present state of New Zealand with its past, went on to show how intimately bound up with our wolfaro was a correct, knowledge of agriculturalchemistiy. Thoaddroes (for which we regret wo cannot find spaco) was most able and lucid, dealing with the statistics of past production and export, and referring to the grand future which was evidently before this colony. At tbe close, -v.r Pond was awarded a hearty vote of thanks.
Papers were thon read as follow :-(l) " Descriptions of somo new c_.rnbidi», or carnivorous groutd beetles," by Captain Broun ;(2) on a new species of Chromodoris (a mollusc with breathing organs on its back), by Mr T. F, Cheeseman ; and (3) some notes on the stitoh bird (pogonorius cincta), by Mr A. Keischek.
The President remarked that there were on tbe tablo for inspection a bronzo foliage variety of Pukapuka, also a hybrid raised at Nelson from the Now Zealand tree fuchsia, and the common fuchsia. About 150 specimens of stuffed birds wero also on viow on the side table.
After some discussion, in the course of which the President and Meesrs Jo.iah Martin andThos. Peacock, M.H.R., praised the scientific ardour of Messrs Broun and Keisohek, the proceedings terminated. ' The next meeting takes place on tbe 29th instant,
