COLLECTION OF CITY REFUSE.

Tho Englnter'a Sohow*.

At tho meeting of the City Council last night tho Engineer aubmitted a report upon this Bubjeot in accordance with the instructions he had received to draw up a scheme on tho lines of the prefltmt nighteoil contract. Embodied in it also, according to direction, was a list of tho stroota winch could bo left out of any now contract if it woio desired to continuo tho present system. In the iirst plnco, tho report recommended that tho ecliedulo under which to invite tenders should bo for " collecting and romoving houso and other rofuao (innnurOi nighteoil, and liquids oxcepted)" Ist in the old city wards, 2nd in Karangiihapo, 3rd in I'oiißOnby, and 4th in Grafton, at por box or package, containing not more than four and a half cubic feet, and also for every box or package containing more than four and a half and not more than nine cubic foot, In the evont of tho present system being continued, he proposed lo etriko out from tho schedule all those streets that are composed principally of dwelling-houses and few or no shops, vu.: —East Ward : O'Rorke-street, Alfredstroet, Eden Crescent, Waterloo Quadrant, Eden-stroot, Emily Place, Jermyn-street, City Road, liverpool-street, Mount-street, Graf ton Road, Wynyard-stroet, Havelockatroot, Domain-street, Alton Road. North Ward : Graham-street, Hardingo • street, Duke-street, Dock-stieot, Moore - street. South Ward : Cook-street, between Hobeon und Union-strcot, Salo-street, Welling-ton-street, between Howe-street aud Franklin Road, Hepburn-streot, Bolwynstreet, llerosford-stroet, Day-street, Upper Union-streot, William-street, Howe-stroet, LittloHepburn-streefc,Baker-street, NapierBtroet, Collingwood-street. Grafton Ward : Soafield Viow Road, Arawa - street, Urafton Road. Karangahapo Ward : EastBtreet, West-street, Cobden-streot, Edin-burgh-street. Poimonby, Ward : College Hill Road, Jervois Road, botweon Three Lamps and Shelly Beach Road. The reductions would thoiefore be: — East Ward, 15 streets ; North Ward, C streets ; South Ward, 14 streets ; Grafton Ward, 3 etroets; Karangahape Ward, 4 streets; and Ponbonby Ward, 2 street*. Other arrangements for tho disposal of this refuse would shortly require to be made, a» tho contractor stated that there was no place now where it could be deposited outside of the city. In large towns where it was not otherwise utilised it was generally burnod. The present contract or lystem might bo continued for «ix months longer until information was obtained of the best way of treating the refuse. The present system could not exist; that was to put the responsibility upon the contractor of finding a dopftb. So the sooner the matter was taken in hand tho better. Ho would obtain all the information ho could as to the different modes of dealing with city refuse, and report to tho Council as early as possible. Ihe Stroots Committee, to whom this repoit had been referred, recommended that the Engineer's' report should be udopted as a temporary moasuro, besides stating that they had found that in other cities in New Zealand where the rates were higher the people requiring the removal of refuse had to pay from 12s to 24* per annum for tho same.—Or. Aickin moved that the contraot should be extended to the end of the year, inn toad of only for six month*.— The preposition was carried.—Cr. Dignan moved, and Cr. Holland seconded. "I hat every street in the city be visited by the dustcart."—This was put and negatived.— The report as amended was then adopted.—Tho Town Clerk, however, is now in doubt a-i to whothor tho streets indicntod by tho Enginoor are to bo left out of tho schedule for tho now contract, or whothor thopresont system is to bo continued unchanged up till the end of the yoar. Ho will therefore delay action, for tho purposo of raising this point at tho noxt mooting of tho Council.
