The slogan of ward allocation was raised again at the City Council meeting !njt night, and a very active debate was the result. Cr. Montague, always on the qvi vive when the interests of the North Ward are at stake, wanted to know who was to pay for the. carriage from Hobsonl street of the earth required for the filling up of Patteson street, in which three wards are concerned. After considerable skirmishing, Cr. Devore effected a neat com* promise for Ponfonby by having its contribution for 8,000 cubic yards fixed at £250, and then a proportionate charge was fixed for the 12,000 yards needed by the South Ward. Thus by Cr. Montague's timely action his ward gains something more than £600.'.:.- .I-. ,-i ■■■*;> -'.; - •:"'.■:- \-P.:-:,A
