LAUNCH AT MECHANICS' BAY.

A new steamer, intended for towing purposes, * and to be employed in this harbonr, was , launched by MrMcQuarrie, of Mechanics' Bay, ' this morning. The launch was a successful one, : and tho christening ceremony, was performed by Mlbs Batger, who named the .vessel tho 1 Awahina (help). The vessel has been built to the "order of Mr Compton, with whom'are associated several Auokland shipowners, and others aa part owaers.- She is well put together, and rellects credit on her builder. Her dimensions are as follow:—Length between perpendiculars, 100 ft; length overall, 105 ft Gin; extreme beam, 2lft; depth of hold, 10ft __; draught of water aft, 9ft 6in: draught of water - forward, 7ft; displacement, 215 tons. The tonnage of the vessel is 205 0.8.M., and 163 gross register. The vessel has one mast, is rigged as a.cutter, and has one batch, which is situated forward. She is fitted with a cabin aft, and quarters for the crew have been arranged forward. The machinery -for the Awahina is now on the way outfrom Glasgow In the barque Lutterworth, having been shipped by Ben McLoughlln. The' Lutterworth will arrive at Otago, where the ; machinery will be transhipped, and will arrive here about two or three months hence. It will ',be placed in the vessel by McCoskrie & Son. •'The engine Is 340 h.p. indicated. The boiler is __ft9in_y 9ft,and will work up tbßolbs, butis '■/- tested to twice that, while the cylinders are 18J ' and 33. The designs for tho Awahina are by Mr . TrevHhldk, Naval ArcMtect, who has superintended tho construction of tho vessel.
