DEATH OF MR WHITSON.

We regret to announce tho doath of Mr Robert Whitson, browor, of this city. The sad event occurred this afternoon at 12.45 at his rosidonce, Watorloo Quadrant, in the 79th year of his ago. Mr Whitson had, previously to his last illness, enjoyed an uninterrupted state of health, and was always regular in his business habits. Tho deceased gentleman had beon ailing for about four months, but only took to his bod on Friday, tho ICtli inst, and has beon attended by Dr. Stockwoll to tho period of his death, which apparently was peaceful and without physical pain. Mr Whitson was a native of East Lothian, in Scotland, whoro ho commonced business as a brewer about sixty years ago ; aubsoquently ho browod at Loith. Tho latter town ho loft twenty-six years since to try his fortune in New Zealand, and in this city ho succeeded in establishing tho well-known brewery of Messrs Whitson and Sons. Mr Whit on was a man of quiet, unostentations habits, • never showing disposition for offices in public life. He was a gonerous and thoughtful employer, and will be long ismsod by his employees. He was the oldest Freemason in Now Zealand, and a member of St. Andrew's Lodge, He wns also a member of tho Presbyterian Church of St. Andrew.Symondsstreet, and the oldest and practically the most experienced elder of the church. At tho laying of tho foundation stone of St. Andrew's tower Mr Whitson was present, and gate some of his reminiscences of his long career, particularly in connection with the church of his fathers. Mr Whits 01 outlived two of his sons, and leaves behind him three married and two unmarried daughters.
