The number of carcases that are damaged in the shipment of frozen meat by theMataura is 3,000. The causo is attributed to the meat having been frozen while warm. [The total cargo of frozen meat taken by the Mataura embraced the following consignments -.—6,577 carcases mutton, 239J carcases mutton, i\ carcases veal, and 40J Carcases veal, by New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company ; 420 carcases mutton, 591 backs mutton, 21 boxes fish, 51 brace pheasants, 2 boxes assorted meats, 1 leg mutton, and 0 hindquarters beef, by Fisher and Co. (Limited); and 202 carcases mutton by Grice and Parker. The meat was insured in the Now Zealand Insurance Company for £10,626, of which £7,626 was re-insured in various Colonial and other offices.
