Mr Shaw, the Madagascar missionary, on his return on Thursday. He is advised to claim ten thousand pounds tf.mpemotion for his mprisonment by the French authorities. Tho Madagascar Difficulty. The English press generally urges the maintenance of a firm attitude towards France in regard to Madagascar- The bombardment of Malagsy ports is reported to be imminent. Tho Carey Family in London. The Wife and family of the late James Carey have arrived in London, where the eldest son is required as a witness against O'Donnell. His examination takes place to-day. Serious .Railway Accident. A railway accident involving heavy casual-ties is reported from Roumania. Tho Austral Inquiry. London, September 25. The official inquiry into the sinking of the steamer Austral in Sydney harbour has commenced, and evidence portaining to the structure of the vessel has been taken. The defence of tho oflicers will be that the ship was unstable. Vessel Overdue from Now Zealand. Tho ship Loch Fyne, which left Lyttelton for London on May 14th, has not yet arrived at her destination, and fears are entertained for her safety.

Fronch Dofeat In Madagascar,
London, September 25
Telegrams which have been received from Zanzibar report that lighting has taken place between the Hovns and French troops in Madagascar. The former made an attack in force on tho position occupied by tho French on the west (sic) coast of tho island, and after stubborn fighting, lasting several hours, the French were driven from their position with considerable loss.
Tho Rocket Factory Explosions.
London*, September 20,
The explosions at the rocket factory at Woolwich continued witli intermission for upwards of an hour. Some of tho rockets travelled for miles, but in the majority of cases little or no damage was done by them. It is believed that tho explosion was accidental.
London, September 24,
At to-day's wool salo the catalogue comprised 10,000 bales. The tone of the sale was again firm.
