CORRESPONDENCE.

[To the Proprietors of tho "jS'.Z. Herald," per favour of tho Evening Stak.]

Sin, —The discussion which took place at the Board of Education on Friday last on the question " Whether tho religious sect to which teachers belonged should bo included in the roll to bo prepared for the uso of the Board " was conducted without any bitter feeling being imparted into it : so much so, that many members of tho Board remarked to me after the meeting was over that they were glad no bad feeling had been manifested during the discussion. It remained, therefore, for the editor of the " Herald" to write and publish on the following morning ■what 1 conceive to bo a most impertinent sub-leader, no doubt with tho object of currying favour with the Catholics at my expense. With Mr (loldie I have nothing to do, as lie can answer for himself, and I have not communicated with him ; but I protest against motives being imputed to me all through the firticlo in question, "that I have not a disinterested desire for the purity of the secular system," and that 1 had a "down " on Roman Catholics. All through my public career 1 have never allowed my own religious belief to inlluenco me ono iota in my action towards individuals or committees, and I challenge proof to the contrary, Tho report in the "Herald" was unfair. All Mr Luke's remarks were published, and mine mutilated, and the principal arguments in favour of a record ofthe creeds of teachers left out, viz., that by a roll (including the religious sect, to which a teacher belonged) could we only be able to? give tho contradiction to the rumours that were prevalent that teachorp of a particular sect wore favoured; that I had been asked and I could nor answer the question as to whether it was _ true ov not, and that a roll including tho above could alone give a complete answer to this question. For proof as to your report omitting, I refer you to tho Chairman's remarks at the close of tho discussion as to the " rumours," though if you refer to your report notone word is reportedaa to rumours, my remarks ns to my once having been a member of tho Board under tho denominational system of education, and as to my having seen the evil of such a system ; also, my concluding remarks as to my not being actuated by a spirit of bigotry in this matter, but with a desire to be able to give a denial to the rumours which were bo rife —all those were left out. Ido not expect that the " Herald" can find room for more than a summary of what takes place at the Education Board meetings; but in common fairness, the important points should not bo left out on the pica that you could not find room fov all, when your editor (who has before now shewn that ho has a dsuvn on me) can rind room for an article full of vile inuendos for which Up has not a particle of evidence ov proof, I should have referred to this matter at tho next meeting of the Board, but I know your editor would do as he did once before— not allow one word to appear in .your paper,—lam, yours, truly, H, Hews,
