THE OPENING OF KAWHIA.
Natives Destroy tho Buoys and Plunder a Store.
[I'JiOM Ot'll OWX CORRESPONDENT.]
Cambridge, this day,
The "Waikato Times" correspondent at Kawhia sent somewhat unsatisfactory intelligence yesterday regarding that place and tho attitude of the natives. He says that the harbour beacons have been pulled up and broken by the chiefs Tv Te Ao and Tihirahi, of the Ngatiinahuta tribe. They are now preparing to sink the- buoys. The property and lives of European residents arc. threatened if they do not obey the mandate of the Hauhau chiefs, and leave Kawhia within a few days. Tho Maoris havo given them notice to this effect. Ngatimahutas openly declare their intention of opposing settlement there, tho land being theirs. Tengakau is supposed to have a finger in the matter, Tho women and children of the above trlho are being removed from tho settlement on the west side of the harbour. Tawhiao is at Torea carefully watching proceedings.
LATER DESPATCHES..
Settlers Alarmed.
Hamilton, this day. The natives havo destroyed the beacons,
and, !\t last accounts, were proceeding to demolish the buoys The attitude of tho natives is very threatening, and it Is thought they have not been in such n,n unsettled state for soveral years.
The tribe implicated is the J^gatrmahuhi, tho King's tribe. Tawhiao is at Torea, closo to Kawhia, and must bo aware of all tho proceedings. Tho settlers are much frightened and have petitioned Mr Bryce for protection. Mr Bryce will probably visit Kawhia in a short time,
The statement in the Association tclo gram that the store was looted is incorrect
