POLICE COURT.-This Day.

Justices of the Peace.) Drunkenness.—Six persons were punished for this offence.

Assault.—William A. Smith was charged with assaulting James A. Campbell by striking him in the face with his clenched fist at Ponsonby on Sept, IG.— Defendant asked for au adjournment, because he had only received tho summons at 5 p.m. yesterday.—Adjourned till to-morrow. Wandering Cattle.—William Bond was charged with allowing cattle to stray in Victoria Road, Devonport.—Fined 10s and costs.

Is a Cocoanut a "Missile?"— Three young boys named Thomas Featon, Fredk. Palmer, und Archibald Cox were charged with kiekingacocoanut through the window of Mr Offer's residence in Pitt-street, and thereby causing damage amounting to £0 10s.— Mr Thome, who appeared for Palmer and Cox, took exception to the summons in that a cocoanut was not a "missile" as described in the Act. He quoted from the dictionary that a "missile" was "any weapon thrown for the injury of others."— The Bench considered tho objection fatal, and dismissed the case.

A Dirty Trick.—A boy named Francis Fletcher was charged with throwing a stick, smeared with human excrement, at Sarah McCormick. Ke pleaded guilty, and was fined 10s and costs, 15s.

Fast Driving.—Thomas Laverty and Robert Cunningham were charged with driving at a pace faster than a walk on Queen-street Wharf. — Defendants said they were anxious to catch a steamer, for which they had passengers in their vehicles. —Fined 10s and costs.

Larriki.nism. —Three boys, named John McConnell, Wm, McConnell, and Wm. Lye were charged with unlawfully assaulting Frederick Waite by knocking hiui down and striking him with their clinched fist.— Waite, a lad of about 11 years of a^e, described the offence, which appeared of an unusual nature. He denied having given any provocation.—Lye denied having taken part in the assault.—Evidence was given by Patsey Bartley, who deposed that 'Waite was annoying Mrs Harkens when McConnell struck him.—The McConnell boys made a similar statement.—Tho Bench decided that an assault had been committed.—The two McConnells were fined 10s and costs, or in default seven days' imprisonment. Lye was dismissed. Adjourned Cases. — Charges against James Courtayne for allowing his chimney to take firo, and against Hugh and Charles Jngger for taking photographs in the street on a Sunday, were adjourned until tomorrow. Larking. —C. Clayton was charged with wilfully and knowingly putting the break on a second-class railway carriage, between Auckland and EUerslie, on September 13th.—Defendant pleaded guilty. —Fined 20s and costs.
