MINING NEWS.

o THAMES, this day,

! Qceen OF1 Bhautt.— The contractorsat No. 10 level are pushing on with the drive eastward on tho main reef, which is now bigger than when first cut. It is a fine Bolidbody of stone, well mineralised, and looks well for gold, though none has yet been seen Iv it. Tui-, however, is not to bo wondered at when it Is rememb»red that at the level above the drive was in 80ft. before gold was seen. A crushing is now going through the battery, and is shaping Fairly. The reef in the winze at No 9 level also looks as well as could be desired, though no specimens have yet come to hand from it,

Bright Smilk.—Tbe manager to-day banked 501bs specimens. He also saw a Mile gold in breaking down the reef at the 90 feet level in the drive going towards the old Candlelight claim.

The manager of the Waihi mine reports, under date of April 14, as follows :-During the pjst fortnight tho works in connection with the opening tip of the mine and putting things in working order have been progressing favourably. I have driven about 40 feet on the footwall of the reef from Fra^er'a cross-cut towards the Dulcibeli boundary. I have tapped into it in a couple ot places, and it allows a fine body of stone giving very fair prospects, but I will not be able to break it down till the battery starts, as the breaking of the quartz would only give extra labour. Have driven 60ft and cut reef in new intermediate level, and am driving on it as above. In Young Colonial section I have driven about 20ft south, towards Martha boundary. The reet &ho\\s a great improvement on our starting-point, as most of the hard flint bas given way- to nice, kindly • looking quartz, which gives a very fair prospect. 1 have started driving north with similar prospects. Both hoppers are finished aod full of quartz, but it will take all the week to finish the battery. I believe it will really bo finished by that time, as very little remaius to be done.- (Signed) JOHN H. MOORE. _ Just-in-Time,—The driving wheel having arrived on Monday, it wus put into position with as little deliy as pos-ible, nnd on Tuesday evening the contractors were enabled to make a start to deepen tho shaft another hundred efet. So far they have made good progress. The manager is ongiged putting up a rise on No, 2 to tho surface, in order to provide the necessary ventilation. A rich utriuger, which broke out of No. 1, is being followed ahead into Boiid ground. It U going into the big reef which crosses the Just-in-Time ground about fifty feet ahead. This leef is known to be goldbearing on the Burface, though it has not been touched yet by the present company, and will, if proved payable, greatly enhance the already excellent prospects of the mine lONA.— The discovery of a splendid reef in a cross-cut from rhe low level, sixty feet distant from the shaft, is good news for ihe shareholders, and, as the lode it in the strike of the Green Harp reef of the Union Beach, it may turn ont to be the continuation of the same. Tbe manager is opcoiog out on it, and baa broken down fine-lookiuK stone, heavily mineralised, and in every respect looking well for gold. Union BeAcn.— The construction of the dam in the long scries of drives on the Golden Pah side of tho shaft has proved successful, and the cost and labour of pumping has bsen very greatly diminished. By this means there is now ample opportunity of overhauling machinery and electing alterations without aoy anxiety as to the rising of water. Passers-by remark with surprise on the slow and gentle move of the machinery which is now noticeable, and is all that ia necessary to keep the water down. The reef in the low level looks well, but has not yet thovm gold. An important work, started recently, is a drive on a branch of the cross reef which was discovered to have gone off in the w»U in close proximity to a rich run of gold worked in old time?.
