Bridget's Christmas Holiday.
The near approach of Christmas brings to the front nnother grievauce connected wilh the saucy "Jady helps" of Auckland nnd neighbourhood. Thoroughly worn out with their heavy and multifarious duties, Bridget and Jemima pant for rest and relaxation. Holidays they must have, and without waiting to enquire whether their absence will cause any lucouveumicc, they have begun to go oil' on French leave for a vacation of from two to threo weeks. Tho mistresses may protest and appeal, but all is of no avail, and they have no alternative but to resign tlm<.selves to tluir fate, and do without n-sioUnc! at n time when it is mo<t urgently required. Now, we do not object to dome, t'cs getting holidays, but wo must strongly deja-cale tho dictatorial tone adopted by theso " servants," and the ut'er callousness and heartlesancss of their conduct. A corresioudeut suggests thut several hundreds if Cbinanun should bo imported nnd innoduced as domestics to protect the ladies of Auckland from tbe intoleiible despotism of tho local Bridgets and lietsy Jane*. Iv spite of whit la assert!d regarding the excellence of John Chinaman as cook aud house-" maid," we do not desire to see " the heathen Chinee" installed in cur kitchens and laying our dining-room tables. With all her faults —or at least with a great many of them—we love Bridget still; but she had belter tako warning that ther* is v limit to human endurance, and the may he assisted to tnko i rational view of tbo siuation by iho kaowlcduo that unless she mends h?r ways she may wako up some line morning and find that her occupatiou is gone.
