DIOCESAN SYNOD.

THE Synod met on Thursday afternoon, His Lordship Bisbop Cowie presiding,

There were present.—Ucrgy: — Vcn, Arthdeneous Clarke, Maunscll, P/itt, and Willis, and Eevs. Eaker, Bates, Big^s, Burrowa, Calder, H. Davis, J. X, Davis, Dudley, Farley, Gould, haselden, Hawkes, Kidd, Mulgan, Nelaon, Purchas, A, Taylor, Tebbs, Smalllield, and Walsh. Laity;— Messrs, Uatger, Bceie, Boardman, H. Boardmari, H. Clark, R, M. Ulark, Clayton, Coclirane, Crispe, Doouin, Gossett, Green, Hammond, Haultain, Heatb, Hesketb, Hills, Hughes, Jackson, Kensington, Kirkbride, Larkios, Luke, Lusk, McMillan, Pierce, JKawlings, Rice, Sawkins, 'J'aylor, Upton, Vickers, ■ White, and Woollams.

Diocesan Statistics.—The President Bubmiited a tabulated statement of Diocesau statistics, and in doing bo paid a coidial tribute of praise to the compiler (the Rev. C. M. Nelson) for the method and accuracy with which he had drawn it up,

Insufficient accommodation.—Tho President directed the attention of tho Synod to the fact that more adequate prevision for its accommodation was required. Many members at present had to sit on rough benches. iiOME Mission.—On the motion of Mr A, K. Taylor, the Synod went into committee to consider the repot t of the Home Mission Select Committee,—After a protected discussion of the proposition of numerous amendments, none of which were accepted, the first three recommendations were agreed to. Tliey were as follow: —"(1) That a society should Le formed, to be called the Home Mission Society, tor the extension of church wo k in the diocese of Auckland. (2) That t.e affairs of ihc society should be managed by a committee to be elected at the annn 1 meeting of the subscribers, the members of the Standing being (ex officio) members of the said committee, and the Bishop being tbe President. (3) That every member of tin; Synod (clerical or lay), and every layman who has been registered as an elector should ba invited, by cir- • cular, to become a member of the : society by subscribing to its funds," | The remaining recommendations —efcr in all —merely dealt with matters of routine, and were almost unanimously adopted, as was also tbe resolution, " Tbat this Synod request the Standing Committee to take the nccosßary steps to carry out the foregoing suggestions." St. Thomas's.—The Rev. F. Go«ld sub. mitted the report of thu Select Committee appointed to deal with tho petition for the constitution of a now church in City West, to be ttylcd_ St. Thomas's. it stated that the liabilities, ef St. Ihouiuh's Church amounted to £55, and that there appeared to be a sufficient maintenance for a clergyman. The committee therefore recommended that the prayer of the petition should he granted, and that the boundaries of the proposed parish should be as follow : -From Waitemata Harbour by a lino leading through tbe centro of Welles-ley-street to ita junction with NeUonstreet, thence South by the centre of Nelson-street to ita junction with Beres-ford-street, thence by; the centre of Beras-ford-atrcet to the junction of the latter with Howe-street, thenca by the centre of Howe-street to Hopetoun.stroet, thence by the centre of HopetoUß-street to Ponionby Road, thence by tbe ceutre of Ponsonby Koad to Pictoa-street, thence by the centre of Picton.street to Fagetstreet, thence by the centre of Paget-street to Anglesea-strcet, thence by the centre of Angleseastreet, to Clyde-street, thence by the centre of Clyde-street to Franklin lioad, thence by tho centre of JtTanklin Road to England-street, thence by the centre of England-street to College Koad, thence croasicg College Road to the S.E. corner of lot No. 17, thenca along the eastern boundary of the said lot, and continuing in the same direction to Waitemata Harbour, and thence by the shores of Waitemata Harbour to the point of departure. It was further recommended that the property o£ B the parish should bo vested in the Diocesan Trustees— The report was adopted, and Messrs Hamilton, Downs, and Cornish appointed parochial nominators.

i>T. George's, Shortland.— Mr Upton brought up the report of the committee appointed to enquire into the debt due by the above parish. The report stated that the parish owed the Uiocesan Endowment Fund £500, with £84 inteieat, and the Parochial Endowment Fund £175, with £42 interest. —The coramittco recommended the remission of £101, on ihe condition that, of the remaining £500,£250 should te paid within the next three years, and £250 in the five years foliowiog, security being given for the payment of the second £250.

Dk»lihgs With Church Pboperty.— Mr Pierce moved seriatim bia resolutions requesting for the Dioceaan Synod the authority of the General Synod for the sale ot the site of old St. Sepulchre's Church, and the transfer of the remainder of the property for sites in Kyber Pass Koad, leave to exercise its own discretion in the leasing of portions of the Cathedral site, and power to sell arid exchange some country land.—They were adopted, St Mary's, Tahanakl— Tfie petition praying for the constitution, of a parish at New Plymouth, to be called St, Mary's, was granted, and parochial nominators were appointed. Thanks.-The thanki of the Synod we re given to thefraanagers of the " Church Gazette " (Messrs Upton and Coehrane) and to Messrs Ewington and Larkins for their combined tervic«s at tbo gaol, The Term " Licensed Cix&QTixxs." — On the motion of the Rev. C. M. jselson, it was agreed to a*k the General Synod to define the term "licensed clergyman," as contained in the Statutes.

SUNDAY-SCHOOL LKSSOH3.—The Rev, Mr Bipgs moved, and it was agreed, that the Archdeacon Maun'cll and the Revs. Bates, Dudley, and Gould, and Messrs Heath, Hammond, and Worthington be appointed a committee to prepare Sundaytchool lessons for the cnauing year. Parochial Repeskextation.—On tho proposition of Mr Klce, the Standing Committee was appointed to draw up a scheme for representation at the Synod, and to submit the tame next year. St. Mark's, RoMuera.—The petition praying for tho ctostitution of a parish at Remutra, to be called St. Mark's, was granted upon the petition of the Rev. F. Gould, and tho boundaries settled as follows : —" On tho north by the southern boundary of the Parish of St. Mary, as tho same commences in Bobson's Bay and continues lo its junction with tho eastern boundary of the Parish of St. Sepulchre's, thence on the west by tho eastern boundary of the said patish list named to the S.E, coiner thereof, thence on the south along the boundary of Lot 71 of Section 10 of tho suburbs of Auckland, continued in a straight line to the Manukau Road, thence along the western side of the last mentioned _ road in a northerly direction, to a point opposite the centre of Market Koad as it abuts on Manukan Koad, thence from such point across the Ouehunga R.oad and along tho Southern side oi Market Boad to its junction with the great South Road, thence from such junction by a straight line to tho S.K. corner of Orakei Road where the same joins the Kcrnuera Road, thence along the eastern tide of the Orakei Kqad t<> tho stream under Kenneally's Bridge, thence along the said stream to Hobson's Bay to the point of commencement. Messrs Charlea Alexander, E, Heskcth, and McMillan were appointed nominators for the new parish. Pkocural op PORTRAITS.-In answer to Mr Clayton's question as to what steps had been taken to procure irom England the portraits of Sir William Martin, Bishop Patteson, and tho Rev, J. Atkin, the President said that one of Bishop Patteson's sisters had presented his portrait to the Synod, and that the procural of portraits of Sir W. Martin and the Key. J. Atkin had been deferred until the opportunity occurred of getting good pictures from their mends.

Pension FuNp.-Mrßoavdinan's resolution ior the appointment of the Revs. Dudley and Calder, and Messrs Pierce, Upton, Heatb, and Boardraaa as a committee to consider tho question of a General Pension l( und for this ecclesiastical province, and report to the fctaudins Committee, was moved by Mr Upton and agreed to. Legislative —Mr Pierces motion re the introduction to Parliament of a Bill for the mcoiporation of bodies of trustees was agreed to, while the Rev. Mr Tebba'a motion for the Bccond reading of the Bill te amend Statute 1 Clause 24 was withdrawn, and his motion for the second reading of the Bill to amend Statute 4 Clause 20 was rejected. The Bill to amend Statute No. 2 (election of Syhodsmen) was read a seoond time,

Clerical.—la answer to the Rev. W. Tebbs.the lay secretary said that Clauso 25 was added to Resolution. No, 1 by the Synod in 1881.
