Mr Archibald Archer has been appointed to tho Colonial Trcasurcrship, temporarily bold by tho Hon. Tuomns Mcllwraitb, vice Sir Arthur Palmer, who recently accoptod the Presidency of the Legislative Council. Mr Archer will also hold the portfolio of Public Instruction. ATTEMPT TO BURN A SHIP. MELBOURNE, this day. An unsuccessful attempt was made last night to set fire to the ship Oasis, lying at Saudridge Pier. A quantity of ehaviugs saturated with resin and kerosene was found to be on fire, but was extinguished without any damage being dono. The carpenter of the ship is stated to bo implicated in the attempt, THE ANGLO-AUSTRALIAN CRICKET MATCH. MELBOUKNE, January 4. The cricket match between the All England eleven and the Combined Australian team was resumed. The Englishmen continued their second innings with Scotton and Shaw at the wickets. The following are tho tcorcs of to-day's play :—Scotton. not out, 50; bhaw caught, 40; Pilling, bowled, 3; Peate, run out, 2. The visitors wore all disposed of for 308 ruus. The home tenmthen commenced their second inniufp, and when tho stumps were drawn had lo3t three wickets for 127. The match was drawn, tho Australians requiring 156 runs to win. COMMERCIAL.
